Ghost or Precognition
In 1981 our family moved to the suburbs to an artsy town “Embu” in a southeast state in Brazil.
This new development of condominiums was built on this old slave farm. After a year of living in a new house, my younger brother began to have nightmares on a regular basis. They got worse and worse as time went on and my parents became worried so they decided to take my younger brother to the doctor. Once the doctor examined and evaluated my brother, he prescribed medication that would calm him down. A few weeks passed by and my brother continued to have horrible night terrors. My mother visited a few doctors and specialists and they came to the conclusion that it might be a neurological issue, but no conclusive results were found. As time went on, the nightmares became so real for him that he started to see an old man with a dog, even when he was awake. The story was always the same. A man opened the door of the house in the middle of the night, went up to the second floor searching for my brother.
One night, I was reading in bed and my parents were asleep, my brother stormed into my bedroom and jumped on my bed. He was so scared and in distress. He yelled, “He’s coming to get me.” “The old man! Can you see him?” “He is right there!”
As I looked towards the door, I could not see anything and I tried to convince my little brother that he was imagining all of it and that no one was there. I ran into my parent’s room and woke up my parents to tell them about my brother’s visions. As I told my parents, they began to process all of this, my brother yelled, “My head is so big!”
My parent put him to sleep in their bed and pretty much didn’t know what else to do.
The next day was our last day of school before winter break. On our way home from school on a Friday afternoon, as I watched my brother play with his toy cars, little did I know, this would be the last time I would see my brother and my father. A runaway bus smashed our car with such impact that my brother was thrown around the car. I woke up in the hospital and I saw my brother a few hours later just to know that he had suffer head trauma and there was no chance of him surviving.
The next day he died of a severe brain injury, which made me think that the old man with the dog had really come to get him.
We will never know if the man with the dog was a spirit coming to get him or if he had premonitions about his own death.
